演講簡介:
In recent decades, there has been a revival of contentious social movements worldwide, many of which involved unprecedented levels of participation. Given the problem of collection, how can we explain individual participation in large-scale protests? What factors motivate ordinary citizens to join protests? This talk devises a novel n-person coordination game model that illustrates the conditions in which individuals would engage in collective action. It then uses an online conjoint survey experiment to analyze protest participation among non-establishment supporters in Hong Kong. We argue that individuals are more likely to join a protest when they perceive higher values of the public good, higher expressive benefits, higher expected turnouts, and lower costs of participation. It finds that protesters in Hong Kong are more motivated by China-related political issues than socioeconomic issues. It also finds that the causal effects are moderated by individuals’ post-materialist values and confidence in future personal freedoms, but not economic dissatisfaction. The empirical results point to not only the motivating factors of protests in Hong Kong, but also political participation in general.
