Interest in local politics is on the rise, but sadly, innovations in theory and methods have not kept pace, argues British political scientist Charlie Jeffery (2010).
In the first half of my presentation, I will present a Networks and Organizations framework of local politics. Crossing the modes of actors and positions yields three types of networks: position-position networks, position-actor networks and actor-actor networks. In the real world, these correspond to organizational hierarchies, organizational rosters and conventional social networks. By linking these three networks, we can derive measures for several types of personalistic politics such as dual officeholding, career advancement, collusion, patron-client relationships and dynastic succession.
In the second half of the presentation, I will demonstrate how I am empirically implementing this framework to study local politics in South Korea and Taiwan. I will introduce the various sources of online and archival data used to structure the three basic networks. I am eager to receive feedback from the audience regarding the persuasiveness of these measures and methods as they are very much still in development.
